Shadow Law regulating downtown construction is amended.
July 28, 2017
Passed by the Massachusetts legislature and signed by Gov. Charlie Baker, the new law amends previous shadow laws passed in 1990 and 1992 to allow construction of a 775-foot skyscraper in Winthrop Square, which will cast shadows for longer periods of time over the Boston Common and Boston Public Garden. It also does away with the former “shadow bank” that developers could draw from to enable construction of new office buildings that cast shadow over the parks after 10 a.m.
